UKGuardianship – From a Formal Photo to a Funny One: Building Connections Beyond the Screen

September 15, 2026

It started with everyone sitting properly for a photo. The student beside his mum, the educational agent with them, and our UKGuardianship team together in the office – everyone smiling politely, just as you would expect when meeting in person for the first time. A few hours later, we were taking funny photos together. Somewhere between those two photos, we had stopped feeling like people who had only met through screens.

Our journey with this Taiwanese family, who are based in Singapore, actually began months earlier with a discovery call. After they decided to join UKGuardianship, we created a dedicated communication group and gradually got to know one another through messages and regular updates. Then, we finally met face to face.

We invited the family and their educational agent to our office and ordered a simple lunch. There was no formal agenda. We ate, chatted, laughed, exchanged gifts and talked about the student’s new life at boarding school in the UK.

One gift made everyone smile. Throughout August, UKGuardianship had been keeping the family updated about the UK heatwave. They remembered, and brought mini portable fans for everyone in the UKGuardianship team! A thoughtful and very practical surprise.

By the end of lunch, the atmosphere had completely changed. So had our photos. For me, those two photos tell a little story about guardianship.

International education involves many people – the school, educational agent, guardian and, most importantly, the student and family. We may begin with applications, forms, emails and messages, but trust and partnership grow through genuine human connection. Sometimes, you can see that connection in something as simple as the difference between the first photo and the last. And this is only the beginning of their UK journey.
